About Me and Figbowl

They say that nothing worth doing is easy.

Like every one of us, I’ve had my bumps in the road. But if you ask me, I’ll always tell you that I wouldn’t change a thing. Why? Because throughout my journey I’ve honed my skills and proven that my services get results in the real world.

I've spent the last 5 years in the Interior Decor business, having 3 shops, attending markets and doing private consultations. I make unique pieces, I restore furniture, I search for that desired item, I design products and I style a room that will give you not only functionality, but that "I love being home" feeling.

Now that I am based in Murwillumbah, I can now bring my style to the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Lismore and Tweed Heads areas.

How Figbowl Started

The past 5 years of growing my business on the Central Coast in NSW was a roller coaster to say the least.
I started off at home on the 18th August 2014, I had some shares which I sold and used the money to purchase stock from different suppliers. Within 1 month I attended a weekly weekend market at Ettalong Beach and I quickly went onto having my first, very small shop in October where I opened 3 days a week, this then progressed even quicker into having a larger shop and opening 6 days a week.
I decided to mix and match old with new and purchased new stock from suppliers but also went around the local charity and second hand stores looking for different pieces to add in store. I also started making bunting and wall hangers and refurbishing furniture with chalk paint.

Shops at Ettalong NSW

My first little shop at Ettalong was placed in the middle of the markets and was the perfect size to start off with.

I bought shelving from Fantastic Furniture which were flat packed!

It took me and my Hubby a whole day to put all the shelving together, but it was all worth it.

My second and larger shop was at the front of the building where I was able to open more frequently.

Each week was like Christmas with new stock arriving.

I was in my element styling all the products and on a weekly basis would re merchandise the whole shop.

I started off with Cottage / Shabby Chic styles and kept the colour tones neutral with the odd colour here and there.

Long Jetty NSW

After spending 6 days a week for a year driving 2 hours to the shop, an opportunity came up much closer to home in Long Jetty.

So in November of 2015 I moved into my third shop which was twice the size as my old one so purchasing more stock was a must.

Unfortunately a year later that so common a story happened - The Rent Went Up!!!!!!
I was heart broken, I truly loved walking into that shop, but the foot traffic was at a low and it was getting increasingly harder to find the money to pay the rent let alone any other bills, so I very sadly closed my doors.
But, I thought that retail these days was different, I had to think outside the box, so I decided to go back to where I started - my garage, and things could not have worked out any better! I could never have imagined making more money from working at home over having a shop!

I made a small space at the back of our garage to store products.

I had just enough room to be able to make my products as well.

Just a small lick of paint and a big clean up makes the world of difference!

It's all about organisation for me too, I cannot work in an untidy area.

Working from Home

The next 2 years I used my home as a back drop for selling homewares, I spent hours and hours coming up with Feather Wall hangers that were different and unique, sewed and decorated Moroccan Style Throws, worked with a local potter Erin, and came up with my own collection of ceramics, designed my own "Chalkboard Quotes" tea towels and I kept on refurbishing furniture.
I sold things online, still went to local markets once a month, held Pop Up Sales on facebook and held a couple of workshops too, Figbowl was growing!

And then in December 2018 we moved to Murwillumbah!!!!

The future of Figbowl is yet to be told, will you be a part of it?

This is me!

My work is my purpose, my driving force. It's the reason I get up every day and do what I do. Most importantly, it keeps pushing me to achieve bigger and better things with each new challenge.

My refurbishing journey started with this shelving unit back in 2014!

I've always been so passionate about styling rooms, right from a young age I was always changing my bedroom around and trying out different styles.

Walking into a new area that I am about to make glorious gives me butterflies! The potential, all the different ideas floating in my head, my creative ideas just pop up everywhere!!!

I LOVED walking into my shops each day, I would always say "good  morning everyone" silly I know, but I do miss not having a shop.
